People's Community Acupuncture

Burton's aunt Mary was visiting his parents, so he decided to pay the three of them a visit of his own. When he arrived, however, he found out Mary had suddenly departed not fifteen minutes prior. Burton asked his folks what happened and their answer changed his life. His aunt, they explained, had developed a severe, ongoing titanium allergy in response to the rods implanted after an auto accident. Though the rods had long been removed, the allergy persisted, manifesting as MS-style symptoms. Mary's pain that day, they said, had simply become too much to bear.

There's got to be an alternative, Burton thought, to the abbreviated family visits, and the Vicodin, and the pain this aunt was experiencing. Then it occurred to him: acupuncture. One of his best friends was an acupuncturist, and Burton himself was familiar with the practice's capacity for pain relief. And so, to help Aunt Mary, he cracked open the Peoria phone book and started contacting local acupuncturists by writing letters on the pages and folding them into planes. What came back, however, was nothing but prohibitively high-priced quotes.

Back in Chicago, Burton was on a mission. The seed of his future clinic slowly germinating in his head, Burton attended a seminar given by Taiwanese acupuncturist Dr. Tan. That's where he met practitioner Kinga Van Brunt, who became the first acupuncturist at Burton's brand-new business: People's Community Acupuncture. The community model of acupuncture means that treatments take place in a group setting, and that they're priced on a sliding scale. This way, almost everyone has access to potentially life-altering treatments. Acupuncturist Michael Jamlang, shiatsu therapist Vita Lerman, and administrator Hannah Meinken soon joined the team, helping Burton deliver care to his entire community from their newly renovated facility.
