Ray's Food and Walking Tours

Ray McGaughey grew up in Brooklyn, going to school there for seven years before taking off for Carleton College in Minnesota. But he eventually a pilgrimage back home where he is now, as he puts it, "a student of New York City itself." He leads locals, visitors, and bored pigeons on tours that charmingly blend historical, cultural, and anecdotal tangents. Tours fall into one of two categories: walking or food. Walking tours focus more on historical and cultural perspectives, such as the Greenwich Village excursion, which covers everything from the birth of the gay rights movement and rock-star haunts to NYU and Washington Square Park.

Culture and cuisine come together in the food tours, as with the Lower East Side adventure, during which groups learn about Eastern European Jews of the late 19th and early 20th centuries as they explore one of the city's oldest synagogues and sample bialys, kosher pickles, and fresh-from-the-oven matzo from the Streit's Matzo factory. And of course, there is a walking tour of Ray's beloved Brooklyn, where people will see firsthand how Walt Whitman and Henry Ward Beecher's Brooklyn commingles with the multimillion-dollar condos that have gone up as the 'hood has grown in popularity.
