Choose Between Two Options

  • $99 for an eight-hour on-the-water boat handling course with a state boating certificate for one (a $245 value)
  • $385 for an eight-hour on-the-water boat handling course with state boating certificates for four (a $980 value)

This U.S. Coast Guard–approved Accelerated Safe Powerboat Handling course equips students with the skills to safely operate a small power boat. Each option waives the normal classroom prerequisite, instead ushering participants onto the water to learn boat handling in a hands-on environment. However, each student will be expected to study course materials at home in order to pass the written exam, which covers topics such as equipment, rules of the road, navigation aids, and safety precautions. At the successful completion of the course, each student receives a New York state-issued boating safety certificate.

This is a mobile training program; all courses are taught on boats provided by Safe Waters and are docked in a location that is most convenient to its current client base.

Safe Waters

A U.S. Coast Guard–approved boating school, Safe Waters works to reduce the number of boating accidents on New York waterways. The school's veteran maritime instructors conduct intensive courses designed to train students to practice safe and defensive boat handling without covering their hulls with bubble wrap. Depending on the course, students may divide time between classroom study and on-the-water instruction, engaging in demonstrations and activities that illustrate important topics such as safety equipment, navigation aids, and emergency protocols.
