Today, families hardly ever sit down and talk to each other because they can’t remember each other’s names, but at this point it’s too awkward to ask. Here are some hot topics you should discuss when you finally sit down with your teen:

Smoking: Remind your teen that smoking is dangerous to their health unless it is done indoors, where most of the smoke will be absorbed by furniture and other people.

Relationships: Your teen should know that there’s no reason to rush into a relationship at their young age. Rushing into a relationship is for people who are over 23 and somehow still unmarried.

Fashion: When left to their own devices, teens will dress like casual idiots, which sends the wrong message to potential employers and corporate sponsors. Encourage your teen to dress “office-party casual” every day, but allow them to express their personality with a funky hat or subversive pair of boxer shorts.

Health: Remind your teen to shower and put on deodorant every day, but don’t worry about all that uncomfortable “sex talk” stuff. If you don’t have “the talk,” your teens will never even try any of that stuff.

Peer Pressure: Sometimes a teen’s best friends can be their worst enemies, especially when those friends encourage the teen to stay out past curfew or try swearwords.
