Technicians blend sugar, lemon juice, and water to alchemize sticky batches of the fuzz-gripping paste, then nestle vials of the amber gel in a nearby heater. There, the solution becomes lukewarm instead of reaching the scalding temperatures favored by other hair-removal techniques, such as waxing or shaving in a hot-air balloon. Aestheticians apply the sugaring paste to skin with their gloved hands instead of using strips or other applicators, which can harbor bacteria. Once the paste is laced with enough hairs, it joins the latex-free gloves in the trash.
