The Cinefamily cinema screens storied, distinctive, weird, and wonderful movies to provide a refuge for cinemaniacs, celluloid historians, and indie film-fanatics alike. Built in 1942, the picture house flickered for decades as one of the few silent-film plexes in the country before being fully restored to retain its art deco décor. The cinema plays host to a wide array of activities including L.A. premiers, costume contests, live Bollywood musical numbers, ventriloquist magicians, and seasonal (and off-seasonal) celebrations. Boasting a new screen, booming sound system, and ability to project everything from 35mm to VHS, the nonprofit theater is replete with seats and a few plush leather couches to snuggle up for the glowing silver screen, which exhibits themed productions, such as coming-of-age films and Friday night frights. Monthly special events feature 35mm screenings and edifying glances behind the scenes as moviegoers meet the cast, crew, and talking animals of their favorite films. Visit the concession stand to load laps and cupholders with a smorgasbord of buttery popcorn and refreshing soft drinks.
Founded on the principle that movies work best as social experiences, The Cinefamily devotes itself to finding and sharing weird and wonderful films during limited-run screenings and one-off special events. Currently averaging 14 shows per week, the movie house enhances many screenings with celebrity appearances, live music performances, and social activities such as potlucks and snipe hunts. From the theater’s cushy seats and leather couches, guests can take in pristine views of horror films, cult classics, and even TV favorites. Past events have included a month-long film retrospective of Dennis Hopper’s illustrious acting career, a Czech film festival featuring a screening of the surrealist and ultimately banned Daisies, and a celebration of director John Cassavetes featuring appearances by his frequent collaborators Gena Rowlands and Ben Gazzara.
After a spell in the doledrums, this lovely venue is now curated by the Cinefamily organisation of enthusiasts and no longer limits itself to silent flicks...Time Out Los Angeles
