Since the first Logan's Roadhouse opened in Lexington, Kentucky in 1991, the restaurant has grown to more than 200 locations, bringing its grilled roadhouse food as far west as California. At each location, the floors of which are typically covered in shells from the buckets of peanuts at each table, eaters can carve into top sirloin and pull apart baby back ribs that have been slow roasting for eight hours. The grilled grub is complemented by beers, cocktails, sweet teas, and sides, such as baked potatoes, coleslaw, and mac 'n' cheese.

Plates full of barbecue-glazed salmon, grilled sirloin, and country-fried steak emerge from the kitchen at Spike ‘n’ Rail Steakhouse, where chefs assemble hearty sandwiches and carefully spread sauces over meats. In the morning, patrons can sample breakfast dishes such as country-fried streak and eggs and breakfast burritos. Those who prefer a quieter meal can dig into their smoked prime rib on the outdoor patio, which overlooks a pond with burbling fountains and constantly gurgling fish.

At Tommy’s, candlelight casts dark wood wainscoting, burnt-orange walls, and stone floors in a warm glow. The elegant eatery—which has been hailed by Frommer’s as “the most creative restaurant in Visalia"—complements its environs with equally haute cuisine. Chefs serve succulent steaks on cedar planks and drizzle them with southwestern flourishes such as tequila-roasted green chilis, poblano cream sauce, and a single cactus tear. Additionally, Tommy’s stocks its wine cellar with an ample wine selection.

Viking Garden Restaurant is right at home in historical Copenhagen Square, part of Solvang, a Danish-American colony founded more than 100 years ago. Beneath the eatery's crosshatched roof and stork's nest, cooks craft Danish classics such as Norwegian salmon smothered with lemon-dill hollandaise. They even lend Danish flavors to American favorites, such as beef burgers crowned with Danish blue cheese. Before they whip up these entrees, however, Viking Garden's cooks create Danish-inspired breakfasts with everything from kielbasa-filled omelets to Danish-style hotcakes. Imported and domestic pours from an extensive beer list can complement any of Viking Garden's hearty feasts.

Though fish 'n' chips might strike the casual diner as a simple dish, connoisseurs of the British specialty—including the chefs at Alfie’s Fish & Chips—would beg to differ. To them, the dish hinges on a delicate balance of textures: crunchy, light batter must yield to a soft-and-flaky fish.

It’s this attention to detail that has earned Alfie's Fish & Chips droves of fans and made the cross-timbered shop an anchor of Lompoc. Walk past the red telephone box at the entrance and you’ll be greeted by other charmingly english touches, such as a Union Jack flag and bread bowls filled with clam chowder. The counter area doubles as an english market stocked with biscuits, Cadbury chocolates, and other British delicacies.
