According to Lanita Joseph, arts education changes communities for the better. So she founded Lanita Joseph Dance & Cultural Center in 2006 to teach jazz, ballet, and musical theater to students of all ages, genders, races, and sexual orientations. By cultivating a safe space for everyone, she aims to inspire self-discovery and build awareness of issues pertaining to topics such as youth violence.
Performing helps community members learn about each other's cultures and, therefore, about each other. Under Lanita's tutelage, students have been able to show off their skills and artistry at the Harold Washington Cultural Center and the Museum of Science and Industry.
