Ever since Growl Movement opened, a rotating selection of craft beers, hard ciders, and kombucha teas have flowed freely through its taps. The various beverages are crafted at breweries around the Northwest, and most can't be found in a grocery store—normally, you'd have to journey to the breweries themselves to buy a supply for your home. The shop sells half-gallon growlers, quarter-gallon growlettes, pints, and taster portions. Growlers can be reused again and again with a quick wash between fills.

  • A J Java
A.J. Java is an independent coffee house that roasts, brews, and sells farm-direct coffee beans from around the world. Because of the growing popularity of home roasting, A.J. Java offers a roasting class on Saturdays and Sundays to teach coffee-minded denizens the ins and outs of raw beanery. The class—ranging from 90 minutes to two hours in length (depending on class size)—begins with a brief history and overview of java. Eager students will hear the legend of Kaldi and his break-dancing goats and explore the difference between Robusta and Arabica beans. Caffeine enthusiasts can try their hand on a commercial roaster before learning how to roast beans using common household items, which may or may not include Easy-Bake Ovens, dishwashers, and heirloom lava lamps. Class sizes are capped at six students for a truly interactive experience. Each attendee also receives either one pound of roasted coffee or two pounds of unroasted green beans to roast at home.

  • Flavour Spot
A prime player in Portland's food-cart coterie, FlavourSpot serves up synthesized sustenance that boldly blurs the line between breakfast and lunch. A majority of the menu is made up of Dutch tacos, which trade the rote whites and wheats of sandwich shops for a 7-inch baked-to-order waffle that lovingly cradles meats, spreads, and cheeses. The classic sausage and maple ($5 Old Town, $4.75 Fremont) sandwich pairs salty pork sausage with an organic maple spread and can be substituted with a veggie ($5.50 Old Town, $5 Fremont) or vegan ($5.50) version of itself. Other crisscrossed creations include the s'more waffle, pairing fluff with silky Nutella ($3.75); the whipped-buttered, salted-pecan-dotted maple pecan ($4.75); and the ham and gouda sandwich ($4.75), which can be graced with maple spread for an extra $1.
