Primera Taza cultivates an international atmosphere with a menu replete with Central American coffees, gourmet teas, healthy sandwiches, and Mexican-inspired pastries. Complimentary WiFi streams through the airwaves of the cheerily lit café as multitalented baristas plate wholesome breakfast sandwiches, whose toasted croissant might enclose layers of egg, bacon, and cheese. Fostering a sense of community⎯which staffers also support with fundraising events and participation in a weekly farmers' market⎯Primera Taza’s active art gallery showcases the creations of local artists, and free parking in the rear spares customers the hassle of trying to parallel park a flying hovercraft.
The name Bird Pick Tea & Herb comes from a legend told by the grandfather of one of the shop’s founders: long ago, tea cultivators would follow birds known to choose the best leaves for themselves. Although the staff doesn’t actually employ birds to select each leaf, the spirit of the legend lives on in Bird Pick’s careful selection of teas, which come from misty estates in the mountains of China. Seasonal varieties of black, white, and green teas release earthy aromas from bins of loose leaves and tea bags, and oolong teas display the smoky colors left by a harvesting process that involves crushing and fermenting the buds. An inventory of elegant accessories includes receptacles for storing tea, glass infusers for brewing, bowls for whisking matcha tea, and air horns for letting guests know a tea party is over. Bird Pick even sells straw-hued honeys from New Zealand to accent complex brews served in pots decorated with sprays of blue flowers and Chinese characters.
The instructors at LA Dance Central draw from diverse dance backgrounds. One instructor got his start break dancing in Russia at the age of 10, and another has toured the world as a principal ballet dancer and performed with the Pussycat Dolls. In two ballrooms—one in Los Angeles, one in Burbank—they share their expertise with students, guiding groups through West Coast swing, salsa, Argentine tango, and other dances. Students can also opt for private lessons for one-on-one attention.

Walking into Mickey Fine Pharmacy & Grill, one may get the sensation of having stepped into a snapshot of the past. “The Beverly Hills business lays claim to being the only remaining pharmacy in the region with a counter and soda fountain, where patrons can enjoy old-time favorites such as egg-cream sodas and hand-spun malted shakes,” says a reporter for the Los Angeles Business Journal. Perched at the original pharmacy counter, which has been serving food since 1962, customers hoist hunger-defeating burgers or freshly grilled sandwiches. Servers deliver hand-spun milk shakes and malts crafted with artisan ice cream and crowned with whipped cream like a court summons from King Candy. The aisles are still stocked with beauty and healthcare products, which customers peruse, distracted by the aromas of espresso, breakfast burritos, and housemade meatloaf.
Rockpaper Coffee Co. and Grind House Coffee roast premium, single-origin arabica coffees to fuel auspicious morning starts and day-brightening afternoon pick-me-ups. Rockpaper Coffee Co. immerses java sippers in a modern café setting, complete with exposed-brick walls and natural light pouring in from the storefront windows. Lofted at wooden high-top tables, customers can admire the frothy art whipped into their libations or request that baristas draft police sketches of thieving cookie monsters in their latte foam. Other edibles include breakfast sandwiches and fruit smoothies. Occasional open-mic nights and free comedy shows keep laughs pouring liberally.
