  • Utah Arts Festival
Visitors to the Utah Arts Festival stride across concrete promenades and grassy lawns sprawled out between fountains and modern buildings, which have glass walls that reflect the fest’s vibrant paintings and eclectic sculptures. Since its inception more than 35 years ago, the four-day festival has taken over a multiblock radius to accommodate hundreds of visual artists, musicians, performers, and culinary artists, each celebrating modern art and the local community. Throughout indoor and outdoor exhibitions, visitors explore varied works of visual art represented through special exhibitions and hands-on workshops with featured artists. A marketplace also gives artists a place to sell their paintings, wearable art, and sculptures to help disseminate their crafts and raise enough money for van Gogh’s ghost to move out of their basements. Musicians score the festival throughout its days with worldwide genres on several outdoor stages, and storytellers and other literary artists tickle ears with eclectic tales and recitations of the UN staff directory. Across the grounds, festival staffers recycle the fete’s discarded plastic, aluminum, and cardboard as well as food scraps and vegetable oil, and promote eco-friendly practices with a protected bicycle lot and bike valet.

  • The Depot
This month’s Comedy Showcase invites a trio of jokesters to excavate laughs in The Depot’s urban space. Comic J. Chris Newberg enlivens standard standup with his blend of audience interaction and short songs that bait giggles with a grab bag of controversial topics, from religion to the usefulness of the metric system. Newberg’s edgy humor nabbed him stage time with Dane Cook, on Jimmy Kimmel Live, and Comedy Central. A seasoned DJ and comedian, DJ Cooch sweet-talks microphones with confidence gained from co-hosting MTV’s Rock the Vote with Ashton Kutcher and flying overseas to entertain troops in Iraq, and funny woman Jen Murphy dissects dating and intergender communications. Before the show, host AJ from 97.1 ZHT warms up the stage with only a microphone and a huge electric blanket, as audiences settle into the urban interior of the old Union Pacific Station.

  • Alli, Alliance of Action Sports
The Toyota Challenge, aided in part by the Utah Sports Commission, unites extreme athletes from the adrenaline-flooded worlds of BMX, skateboarding, and freestyle motocross for a competitive spectacle of varying heights and Matrix-like hang times. Friday's schedule includes skate vert prelims, BMX vert finals, and an evening concert featuring Neon Trees. Saturday's show has skate-park finals, BMX dirt finals, and FMX; Sunday showcases skate vert finals. Two-time gold medalist Shaun White will get gnarly on the vert ramp, and attendees may see teen BMX-phenom Brett "Maddog" Banasiewicz live up to his name by revving his pedals and scaring nearby dogs into a futile rage––perhaps followed by skateboarding superstar Ryan Sheckler soothing said dogs out of sicking with the tranquil twirls of a few front-foot impossibles.

  • Piccadilly Circus SLC
The seasoned performers of Piccadilly Circus dazzle audiences of all ages with 90 minutes of acrobatics, comedic high jinks, and trained animals beneath the big top. Audiences gasp at high-flying trapeze artists swooping through the air with the confidence of a kite in a wind tunnel, as well as contortionists able to bend themselves into human bonsai trees. Death-defying motorcyclists roar into a caged globe to perform a 360-degree display of vehicular mastery. Gaggles of clowns coax out chuckles, and a trained elephant parades around the ring, occasionally stopping to memorize an audience member's phone number. General-admission seating surrounds the ring, allowing ample viewpoints from which to observe the boisterous spectacle.

  • The Children's Theatre and School of The Arts
With 26 seasons under their belt, The Children's Theatre strives to inspire kids to express their creativity through entertaining, educational performances. Children stare as live performers act out the The Brave Little Tailor, an ancient Brothers Grimm fairy tale that reflects on modern troubles with a gentle lesson about bullying. In the story, a tailor strikes out into the world, only to run into a passing giant, who challenges the tailor to feats of strength such as squeezing water from a boulder or not crying while watching Brian's Song. Seating in the intimate, 99-person theater is allocated on a first-come, first-served basis, and doors open a half-hour before performances so that audience members can snag spots in the front row or on a ticket taker's shoulders.
