About Pure Barre

Carrie Rezabek Dorr founded Pure Barre in 2001, and it has since grown its low-impact, high-intensity, ballet-inspired workouts to locations across the country. Certified Pilates instructor Carrie Bristol—who has an MA in French language and culture—operates the Ann Arbor location. Here, she welcomes students to a total-body workout that blends isometric exercise with therapeutic stretching to burn fat and build lean muscle mass. Although a soundtrack of upbeat music lends rhythm to each session, the absence of jumping, bouncing, and jack-hammering prevents damage to joints. The only equipment is a ballet barre used for stability and the meditative focus that turns a single hour into a boon for the body's health.

I wasn't too pleased about the fact the 5-class credit expires on the same date as the Groupon as that isn't done by other Groupon businesses. I'm happy the classes are popular but a bit miffed that there's only space for one class at each time slot especially in the evenings and the off-hour start times, understandable as you need to clean between classes, but it conflicts with my bi-weekly 7 p.m. kickboxing class. I have really enjoyed my 3 classes but this leaves me the with only option of a 6:30 am class that still means I arrive late for work. Perhaps they'll get popular enough for you to expand again. Until then I unfortunately won't be able to be a long-term customer.

I would not recommend Pure Barre for women my age -- around 50. The vast majority of women were much younger (with one exception an older woman who had been a professional dancer). I am in good shape and attend other barre classes where I am not left feeling as utterly incompetent as I did when doing this work out. If they want to a appeal to a slightly older set, they might want to offer more adjustements or offer a beginners class. Since the classes fill up, though, I doubt they will find this necessary. By the way.... I am fine with pure barre getting this feedback, but I don't want it published with my name attached.

Wow. It was the hardest workout I've ever done. If this is what dancers do regularly, I now understand how they're able to hold their legs so high on all those arabesques! I'm not much of an "exerciser." But even though it was an extremely challenging workout for me, I'm looking forward to coming back. I know I will get the results I want from this workout.
