I wasn't very happy with my experience dining at 34th Street Cafe. I had been there once before and really enjoyed it, so I was looking forward to going back.
I booked a reservation a couple of days before we had dinner there. It was the last week of the Groupon deal so I figured it would be a little busy so I wanted to make a reservation to ensure that we didn't have to wait for a table for a long time. We got there a few minutes before 7, which was when I made the reservation for, and ended up waiting for almost 30 minutes, seeing several couples seated before us who didn't have a reservation. (If the restaurant had made a policy of no reservations through the last week of the Groupon deal and stated so on their website, I would have had absolutely no problem with that. I did have a problem with our reservation being completely ignored even though the guy who took our name seemed as if he noted in on a piece of paper.)
Once we were finally seated at a table that was obnoxiously close to the table next to us (our server couldn't stand next to the table because there wasn't any room between the tables), we were given a regular menu and also three-course menu that was set for that day. After looking over the special menu for the day, I was going to order it because the food looked really good and it was a great price - three courses and two glasses of wine for $26. Great deal, right? Nope. Beneath the price it said "Groupon add $4." Needless to say, my husband and I were not very happy with that. Just because I am using a coupon that they agreed to honor, they want to charge me extra? It was ridiculous to me that this restaurant knew that they were essentially losing money because they did a deal with Groupon in order to gain repeating customers, yet they still tried to essentially rip me off if I wanted to order the recommended meal. We ordered off the regular menu, and the food was really good, but we still left with a sour feeling about the whole experience.
I don't buy Groupons to places that I don't intend on returning to, but I will not be returning to 34th Street Cafe any time soon. I liked it the first time I went, and although the food was great when we went last week, I didn't appreciate the lack of customer service, the severely overcrowded dining room, and the feeling that they were trying to cheat me out of my money.
