Mikeys Way Foundation, Bridgeport

Founder of Mikey's Way, Michael Friedman did not have a normal childhood. He was diagnosed with an aggressive form of cancer at an early age, which forced him to spend months in-and-out of hospitals. During this time, he was offered a wish from the Make-A-Wish Foundation. Instead of using it to go on a trip or meet a celebrity, Mikey chose to create a foundation to help children less fortunate than himself.

Mikey's Way Foundation is dedicated to cheering up kids who are undergoing cancer treatments. Its volunteers stroll the pediatric wards gifting electronic toys to the patients. Mikey knew from first-hand experience that these toys had the power to help distract and delight during the toughest of times. He described the toys as having a transformative effect, stating "And for a moment, the cancer patients are just kids again, even if for only one, short moment." Sadly, Mikey lost his own battle with cancer in 2008, but his legacy to help other children lives on.
