A tree stretches upward from the floor of The Auburn Restaurant & Lounge, its elegant arms twisting high above diners' heads. Upon its branches, twinkle lights coil and dangle, casting a soft glow over the local artwork that dots the dining-room walls. Beneath this canopy of natural and manmade beauty, house-recipe brandied pumpkin soup joins meals of mac 'n' cheese, meat-loaf sandwiches, and four-cheese and artichoke pizzas to comfort stomachs and spark conversation. Specialty cocktails join in that regard, fueling tongues with the tequila-lime Burnt Water and the Watsonian, made with shaken Kurant vodka, brandy, and triple sec. To finish the elevation of the mind and senses, and to prevent underemployed microphones from eavesdropping on neighbours, The Auburn also hosts poetry and play readings in addition to dance and comedy festivals.
