From Our Editors

Pilsen began to assert itself as Chicago’s capital of Mexican culture in the 1960s, when Latinos moved in to supplant the area’s shrinking Eastern European population. The Gutiérrez family found themselves at the center of this transformation when they opened their landmark restaurant, Nuevo Léon, in 1962. Half a century later, Nuevo Léon’s painted façade has become a fixture on 18th Street, and it is difficult to imagine a time when the building was not filled with vibrant artifacts and adobe-village murals. The neighborhood hotspot continues to grow in popularity thanks to delicious Mexican cuisine inspired by the Gutiérrez’s homeland of Nuevo Léon. The family taps into the pulse of their native land with a steak-heavy dinner menu headlined by a hearty and flavorful rib-eye stew. The restaurant’s steam-cooked barbacoa is not to be missed, nor are desserts such as the pastel de tres leches. A BYOB policy allows diners to wash down their meals with a can of beer or bottle of vintage hot sauce.
