Sidetrack may be 30-years old, but the number 1,000 is a better indicator of its dramatic transformation. When it opened in 1982, the bar was less than 1,000 square feet in size, and guests used beer cases as makeshift chairs. Today, the much-renovated space—rooftop deck, lofted ceilings, exposed brick, extra-long bar—unites eight storefronts and boasts a maximum capacity of more than 1,000 Boystown revelers, or one big friendly giant. Though once a nominee for Logo’s “Best Gay Bar in the World,” to many Sidetrack is simply known as “the video bar,” thanks to its sizeable collection of televisions that stream music videos. The video programming follows a weekly schedule: while Mondays bring show tunes, Friday and Saturday nights are fueled by high energy pop hits. Sidetrack also hosts special-occasion events, such as holiday theme parties, wine tastings, Pride Week celebrations, and drag shows.
