At Dahn Yoga's Bronx location, yogis practice mind-body exercises and focused meditation pioneered by founder Ilchi Lee. Before each hour-long class, patient instructors guide students through preliminary warm-ups, including body tapping to trigger blood flow and an abdominal press that kneads out stomach tension and tilts full-abdomen tattoos of flaming pinball machines. Students can gently loosen sinews and build mobility through joint rotations and meridian stretches, and learn martial-arts-esque moves meant to increase awareness. Deep breathing postures aim to engender tranquility, while brain wave vibration exercises meld meditation techniques with rhythmic motion for a more serene cool-down. All classes take place on provided mats in a spacious studio suffused with golden tones, with walls covered in tapestries showing craggy peaks striking eerily perfect mountain poses.
