We go mostly to see our granddaughter compete in the Highland Dance competition, but always have time to roam and enjoy the other areas of the Fest. The only thing I would change is that the merchants stop selling things made in China!

A truly great festival. Stuff to do, stuff to learn, stuff to watch, stuff to buy and stuff to eat ! It's amazing how the games and the music draw you in and before you know it you're tapping your feet or picking a favorite athlete or clan. You should go.

The weather was good. The shopping was available although not as extensive as in years past. There were additional and more interesting food vendors. There was, however, very little to do for the kids. In years past, there have been activities to watch or participate inot even for young children. There was not even a sheep for the kids to pat.We could listen to Gaelic music or stand in line at a food truck for 30 minutes for a drink of water. That is not really kid friendly. We walked around several times. We are part of Clan Lindsay, the largest clan in the US and there was almost no "Lindsay" presence. We're there in full kilt-4 of the 5 of us. (Remember we paid $100 for entrance and did expect some degree of knowledge for that level of expenditure) and we're told by one vendor that we couldn't be part of Clan Lindsay; that as a vendor, they didn't stock Clan Lindsay paraphernalia as it was not a major Clan. Seriously!!??! Where did these vendors come from. This was very different from years past. This was great if you wanted to stand around and drink beer (no line there) or whiskey as an adult but not to attend as a family. We walked around for almost 2 hours so it wasn't as if we just caught a "down time" with nothing going on. This will be the last time we attend here in Richmond. Save your money,if you want family entertainment, and go down to Grandfather Mountain in NC.

Throughly enjoyed the entertainment for this event both from local and international realms. Only need might have been on more food vendors and seating for both eating and musical areas.

It was well attended, so the place was way too crowded and the lines for food were outrageously long, having a baby in stroller, limited our access to entertainment, overall not worth driving >4 hrs to leave in < 2

From Our Editors

The cultures of Scotland and Ireland haven't always meshed in the history book. However, at the Central Virginia Celtic Festival & Highland Games, these two proud heritages will coexist happily for a weekend of autumn fun. Read on to learn more about the festival's highlights:

  • The Athletics: The main attraction of the festival are the feats of Scottish and Irish athleticism on display. Like any good Highland games, that means plenty of traditional heavy events, recognizable by the giant weighted items that are hefted, tossed, and press in pursuit of victory. The festival also offers a full slate of other sports, including rugby and hurling, a favorite of Ireland and its Gaelic Athletic Association.
  • The Arts and Music: The festival also offers a showcase for traditional arts and music. Aspiring performers will compete in various performance contests, in disciplines ranging from fiddle and harp to pipe and drum. There will also be plenty of Highland dance sessions, for those who just want to see dance for dance's sake.
  • The Activities: Elsewhere at the festival, these an activity for every mood. Highlights include live music from the Fighting Jamesons and other Celtic bands, bagpipes, dancing, fiddle and harp competitions, bounce houses, pumpkin and face painting, kids games, heavy athletics, and traditional food and beverages.
