Classes are grouped in 2-3 years old and 4+. The class was chaotic, and the instructor seemed annoyed and rushed. Total waste of time and money.

This gave us a great, and inexpensive, opportunity to see if our 3 year old might be interested in an activity like gymnastics. Although met with some reluctance, she did eventually warm up to the idea and enjoyed herself. Sessions were nice and short, as most parents know attention spans vary greatly.

The class was advertised as a gymnastics class. A more appropriate name would have been preschoolers playtime. The class was very disappointing for my 5.5 year olds and myself.

They seemed unorganized. Our child's class was 45 minutes long and for the remaining 15 minutes, they had to walk down the hallway to a different classroom due to double-scheduling the gymnastics room with another class. There was a different teacher each time, which seemed odd to me. And the gymnastics class did not seem age-challenging. It was slow paced and the children got bored easily.

Born to Flip is for gymnastics skill levels 1 through 10. Level 1 is the entry level for beginning, school-aged children and level 10 is multiple flipping.
Everyone can do Gymnastics! Horizon makes it FUN!

OPEN GYMNASTICS- September - April - not available in the summer
Kindergarteners and older can join us for School-Aged Open Gymnastics, from 7-9pm on Fridays. Members and Non-members welcome. Non-members must have parents complete a 'Release Form to participate. A trained, safety-certified adult instructor is on staff during these hours. No pre-registration required.

Peek-a-Boo Sports (4mo-3yr)

Floor Skills
Age appropriate skills that use your imagination are used such as bunny hops (these increase the strength of the ankle, foot and legs and leads to more advanced tumbling skills)

Cartwheel Club Wallabies
This is for the 3-1/2 to 4-1/2 year olds introducing a year of learning many skills such as donkey kicks (beginning handstands), and all the equipment such as balance beams, bars, trampoline and our trademark circuits. You won't believe how much coordination they retain.
Cartwheel Club Kangaroos
Cartwheel Club Kangaroos is for the 4-1/2 to 5-1/2 year olds enhancing their skills. It is a wonderful year of understanding how to put straight legs with cartwheels, and pointed toes with straddle rolls you get the picture.
Cartwheel Club Monkeys
This section of the Cartwheel Club is for the 5 and 6 year olds. The children will be bridging the gap to the more advanced skills and will be, at times, working in a gym with other classes going on at the same time.

School-age Gymnastics

BOYS: Yes!
Gymnastics is absolutely essential for developing strength and body awareness. As a parent, you will have the peace of mind that your son is learning safe progressions for all the flips and turns they attempt at home. Here at Horizon, we place a strong emphasis on trampoline skills, which is very appealing to boys. These skills are beneficial for success in virtually all other sports. The best part is that no girls are allowed in our specially designed boys classes!
Open Gymnastics
Open gymnastics is the perfect time for all children 1st grade and up to come and burn some energy! No gymnastics skills are required to come and have a great time bouncing on our Olympic style trampolines, jump into our foam pit, climb our ropes, and have fun with friends. Children that are enrolled in gymnastics classes also use this time to work on their skills. A release form must be signed by the parent or legal guardian to participate. School-age open gymnastics sessions are on Friday nights, from 7-9pm, with a special hour just for tweens & teens from 9-10pm!!!

Competitive Teams

Our competitive teams compete in a lesser known, but extremely cool part of gymnastics, which is tumbling and trampoline.
While this sport is not new, it is gaining popularity, as trampoline is now in the Olympics. The sport of trampoline and tumbling (T&T) requires less practice time than artistic gymnastics, due to the fact that there are less events (In artistic gymnastics, girls have 4 events and boys have 6 events). Less time in the gym allows the children to pursue other activities, which we believe is very important.
We have two levels in our team program: Recreational and AAU.
Both of these teams require an invitation to join, but are for all skill levels. We believe that children of every skill level should be given the opportunity to compete in this awesome sport! Our Recreational team does not travel for meets. Meets are held inside the gym, and the children only compete against each other. This option is perfect for children that do not enjoy the pressure of competition, and also for children in their first year on a team.
Our AAU team travels to meets within the state, as well as to meets in neighboring states.
There is also a National Championship meet in the summer, which the children must qualify to attend.

Community Classes

Our Community classes are 'introductory' classes and will give your child the opportunity to try our program for a short period of time.
Whether it's your child's first time experiencing any kind fitness class, is in other sports, or they just like to keep busy, these classes are a great time!!! We offer classes in gymnastics, dance, dance/gymnastics combo, all boys gymnastics, and hip hop for ages 2 and up.
During the school year, classes are held on Saturdays and run in 4-week sessions.
During the summer we offer them in 3-week session, coming twice a week during the week.

Special Needs Classes

The Special Needs Programs are carefully designed to teach balance, movement, and specific gross motor skills in a developmental, carefully sequenced and fun manner.
By continually weaving in previously mastered skills throughout new lessons, the levels have been scaffolded to constantly support new learning.
We have qualitifed and experienced teachers who have the patience needed to teach the skills so that they are understood and can be performed.
The benefits of Gymnastics to all children is significant (click to view report). Horizon makes it possible for all children to experience the benefits of gymnastics through our guiding mission and motto, to make our community the healthiest in West Michigan and leave no one behind while doing it..Classes are held on Wednesdays.

Dance

A few words from our awesome new dance instructor
My name is Kaitlyn Bultema and I have been dancing since the age of 3. I would have to say that I would not be the woman I am today if it wasn't for dance. I learned how to be poised, confident, but most of all I enjoyed expressing how I felt through movement. Dance is a language and being able to express feelings and emotions through your body movement is just amazing! Dance is FUN and can be enjoyed by children of any age or level. I began primarily with ballet, and gradually got into tap, jazz, modern and hip-hop. I studied the Checetti form of Ballet and passed all of the structured Grades I-VI. I then attended Grand Valley State University for dance and was a member of the GVSU Ballet Company for 2 years before taking a different path with my education. However, everything in life comes full circle and here I am teaching! I love dance; it is my true passion and I am so blessed to be here at Horizon contributing to their wonderful staff!

Tots n' Tutus

Does your 2 or 3 year old dream of being a princess or a ballerina?
This is the perfect class for her! While it is a great bonding experience for the parent and their princess (mom or dad must accompany), it is also a very rewarding class for your little one, in terms of social and physical development!
The students begin with stretches, go on to barre work, center floor-work progressions, and conclude the lesson with a song.
The children will learn primary ballet technique including positions, coordination, and develop their sense of rhythm. The child will learn how to work well with others and improve gross motor skills!

Creative Movement (ages 3-4)

This is the perfect class for your young dancer
We focus on creative movement which builds on the necessary gross motor skills needed for primary dance instruction. We use fun, upbeat music to learn basic skills like hopping, skipping, jumping, galloping, and balance coordination. Students will engage in dramatic music movement and learn introductory ballet steps. These include plies, tendu, releve, arabesque, the five positions of the feet, and other introductory dance steps.

Ballet/Gymnastics Combination Class (ages 3-8)

Talent is enhanced from lots of hard work.
The toes, feet, legs, torso, head, arms, fingers. Every body part is used in dance and gymnastics. The body is trained to be strong and fluid, fast and slow, sharp and soft, whatever the choreography requires. Both dance and gymnastics training builds strength, flexibility, coordination, agility, and the confidence that comes with mastering a skill and achieving a goal.
Beyond all the technicalities and artistries, dance and gymnastics is FUN.
Your child will associate dancing and gymnastics with happiness. Your child will celebrate with dancing, while burning that extra energy through gymnastics. It's an emotional boost.
The gymnastics/ballet combo program is separated into age groups and will give your child the opportunity to discover their love for dance, gymnastics or both.
The student progresses through the program by advancing through levels, based on the achievements outlined for each level. You'll love to see how your child progresses in, not only skills, but coordination, fluidity of movement, AND confidence in everyday life.

Ballet/Tap Combo Class (3-5 yr olds)

Ballet provides a wonderful opportunity for your child to learn poise, grace, coordination, strength, and so much more! Tap provides the opportunity to discover different sounds and rhythms while burning off some energy! This is a perfect combination so that your child can experience both ballet and tap in one great class! We offer this combination class for 3-4 year olds as well as 5-8 year olds! Pre-Ballet (ages 5-6)

Pre-ballet classes, for children ages 5-6, awaken the child to music and dance, coordination, and spatial/motor skills
Gentle guidance helps the beginner develop rhythm, cooperation, playful creative dance, and basic ballet skills. The classes offer an atmosphere of fun within discipline so the children can gain a sense of accomplishment as well as exploring their love of dance and music.

Ballet (ages 7-10)

This class is suitable for beginners and will cover the fundamentals of classical ballet technique
It is a more formal setting that will give students the discipline to mature as dancers. The importance of strength, flexibility, rhythm, musicality, and memorization will be stressed. Basics of performing will be introduced. It is recommended that students have taken Pre Ballet but it is not required.

Hip Hop (ages 7 & up)

HipHop Tuesdays 6:15pm (7-12 yrs)
This class if for those 7-18 year olds that want to learn the latest dance moves they see in their favorite movies and television shows! This class is designed for the beginning hip hop dancer. Following the warm-up the students will go on to work on their progressions across the floor, and combinations in the center of the room. The students will focus on body movements, character development, and isolations, using today's popular modern steps. The child will learn how to work well with others and improve fine and gross motor skills, such as hand eye coordination, while building strength and flexibility. Hip Hop portion: This class is designed for any student interested in what one may call "music video" dance. Hip-Hop is a combination of jazz and funk combined with the technique called the pop-and-lock. Unlike jazz classes however, hip-hop does not concentrate on leaps and turns, but rather technical tricks. They dance to contemporary hip-hop, pop, and dance music.

Karate-Jitsu for Children and Adults

The Karate-Jitsu Academy is the coalition of Jiu-Jitsu, Aikido, Judo, and Karate.
Jiu-Jitsu, which included all of the fighting elements necessary for self defense split off into Aikido, Judo and Karate.
Akido teaches one to unbalance their opponent and includes the use of joint locks and pressure points. Judo is the use of throws and takedowns which are safe for sport use. Karate is the art of striking and kicking to vulnerable areas of the body.
The Karate-Jitsu Academyreturns to the original art with its emphasis on teaching self defense.
Karate-Jitsu is a combination of joint locks, kicks and striking techniques. These skills are then applied to the 361 kyusho (pressure) points of the human body. With the use of kyusho points the karateka (somebody who practices or is an expert in karate) can easily overcome a larger, stronger opponent. Karate is more than a sport. It is an art, a science. This is the karate we teach. Karate translated means "To defend oneself with bare hands without the use of weapons." Jitsu means, "True technique."
Remember, the only person that will always be available to protect and defend you is YOU!

Cheer

Cheer Tumbling
This program is designed to help athletes, junior high through high school, prepare for cheerleading tryouts, upcoming events, or just to improve overall fitness and readiness for the sport of cheer. The main focus in this one hour long class is to safely progress each athlete at their own pace. Our experienced and educated cheer staff will challenge each athlete to grow in strength and gain new skills needed to be a successful cheerleader. Take advantage of our back handspring machines, 3 in ground trampolines, tumble track, rod floor, foam pit, and bungee system.
Rip Roar 'N' Cheer
This fun and active program was developed to give younger athletes a taste of what it's like to be a cheerleader. Athletes will develop key tools and skills to help them better understand the sport of cheer. They will learn cheer routines, stunting, and also work on tumbling necessary for cheerleading. It's a great opportunity to teach your child important leadership skills and to encourage team work.
Cheer Squad Training
Horizon is proud to open our doors and facility to cheer squads from throughout the local community. Many squads need a place with a qualified coach with a background in gymnastics to help teach the tumbling skills necessary for the sport. Our coaches are educated and specialize in tumbling and gymnastics and work closely with the cheer coaches to maximize and focus on specific needs. Cheer squads can come in and focus on the safe and proper way to execute tumbling skills in a fun and challenging setting. Horizon has all of the equipment necessary to teach these new skills. Come in and try out our 3 in ground trampolines, foam pit, tumble track, rod floor, and bungee system. We will work with each squad and the schools coach to set up a specific day and time for you to attend.

Cheer Bears

Cheer Bears (4-6 yr olds)
This class is a great experience for your 4-6 year old that has dreamed of becoming a cheerleader! We will introduce basic stunting, tumbling, choreography, chants, and routines. The kids will receive their very own REAL cheerleading uniform and will perform at Horizon's gymnastics meet in January, as well as at the end of the year recital in June! Get ready for your child to have an AMAZING time!

Rip Roar n' Cheer

Rip Roar n' Cheer (7-12 yr olds)
This class is a Rip Roar n' good time! The kids will learn to stunt, tumble, choreograph cheer routines, chant, and so much more!!! This class is sure to energize those girls that have been dreaming of becoming a cheerleader. We will be learning routines to perform at a Horizon gymnastics meet in the winter, as well as at the recital in June. Each participant receives a REAL cheer uniform and pom-poms!!
