About La Jolla Sea Cave Kayaks

Off the coast of La Jolla, in less than two square miles, you can see five distinct marine environments, from sandy beach to rocky coast and kelp forest. These are home to giant bat rays, sea lions, pelicans, leopard sharks, harbor seals—just about any type of marine life associated with California, really. And the best way to see this ecological reserve? While casually cruising on a stable sit-on-top kayak and listening to a knowledgeable guide point out the wonders you might not notice. That's what La Jolla Sea Cave Kayaks has to offer: a fun, wet, close-up view of the world just off shore.

Overall, we enjoyed this experience. It was advertised as more of a "sea-cave adventure" when it reality it was essentially kayaking pretty close to shore with a brief pop into a sea cave. We also got to see leopard sharks, which was cool. The tour guides were friendly and funny and we had a good time. It was less of an "adventure" but very family friendly. You definitely do need to arrive an hour in advance to receive instructions. Also, they tell you "if it's not latched down, you will lose it" (understandably, because if your kayak flips over, you probably will!) but our group seemed relatively inexperienced and no one flipped over or lost anything.

I have kayaked in the Great Lakes, but I was intimidated going out into the ocean 🌊. Thankfully 😅, Marlie, our guide, showed us techniques to use before we launched, which really helped. She also explained about the history of the area. We saw sea lions and ventured near the caves. We also raced each other and had time to swim 🏊‍♂️ in the ocean . It was my highlight of visiting San Diego. 🤘🏻

Had a great time touring with this company last weekend! The tour guides were fun (and protective!) and kept things interesting, even though tides were a little too strong that day for us to actually enter the caves. While I wish we would have explored inside, not being able to did not detract from our enjoyment. I would definitely recommend this outfitter and experience to anyone considering!
