Horrific way to end our wedding week. The massage was great, but that was all. Checked in. The front desk person had no clue which key to give my husband and me for the lockerrooms- stating multiple times that she had forgotten everything since she was off work for a week. We had a couples massage and the massage therapists were so disorganized together, both talking to us at the same time, we didn't know who to listen to. We had bought additional salt scrubs. They said one of us could shower in the treatment room, the other in the locker room. Then they changed their mind and said, you'll both of have to shower in in the locker rooms since they may have another treatment scheduled. This was the kicker. My husband did mention the groupon when he booked. Amongst three people at the front desk, upon checkout, no one knew how to redeem it and told us repeatedly that we had to pay for the massage. The massage therapist kept saying that every couple who has purchased the groupon has had to pay them directly for the massage (I hope that is not the case as there are many couples out there that have paid twice). I asked her, "Do you know how Groupon works?" One of the front desk people asked, "Was this more than you intended to spend?" Ridiculous, tacky and inept employees. If they do not know how this works, they should not be a Groupon business. Honua Kai is a wonderful resort with great service, but this spa is terrible.

They tried to sell me on upgrades which I didn't want from the start. When I got into the massage room she informed me if I wanted harder pressure that too would be an upgrade. Apparently I got an upgraded aroma therapy which was smelling lavender on her hands. Then when I go to check out I had an additional $54 tacked on to my bill for taxes, upgrades and tips. This was AFTER I already paid $132.

does not feel like a real spa - furniture basic and experience mediocre - I would not use again as much better facilities in the area

While the other people in my group enjoyed their massages, I did not. Without getting into details, the massage and experience was awful. I did bring it up to the spa director afterwards and she offered a partial reimbursement as well as a generous "aloha gift" to be sent to my home on the mainland. I still haven't received this "Aloha gift", but over all, not an impressive experience.

From Our Editors

The island of Maui is a land of paradise—the ocean washes up on its shores as the island breeze ruffles palm trees dotted with tropical birds. And this outdoor oasis is extended indoors at The Spa At The Whaler. Inside the Boutique Spa, talented massage therapists incorporate the island's natural aura into their treatments, relaxing bodies with a pampering massage or soothing skin with tropical botanicals. Here's a few of their pampering services:

  • Pokaku Paradise: Warmed basalt river stones are gently placed on the sites of aching muscles, using their gentle heat to melt away tension.
  • Na Mea Lani – "Heavenly Journey": A tranquil body massage is accompanied by a therapeutic face massage while the scents of pleasant aromatherapy fill the air.
  • Whaler Renewal Ritual: Designed to stimulate the lymphatic system, therapists exfoliate your body with an energizing scrub before following up with a 50-minute massage and soothing island botanicals.
