Makai Adventures is a locally owned business built around a small team of full-time Hawaii residents, whose wisdom about the area, Hawaiian history, and marine life shines through on every adventure. All captains are licensed by the US Coast Guard, and the entire team is First Aid- and CPR-certified.
There are two main vessels, including Kainalu (Ocean Wave). This custom-designed boat was built for small-group whale watching and snorkeling adventures, and it comes complete with cushioned seating. Kainani (Beautiful Ocean), meanwhile, is a 43-foot Beneteau Oceanis that carries up to six people during sunset sails, snorkeling charters, and more.
The adventure you choose depends on what you want to see—and also how long you want to be out on the water. There are six-hour snorkeling excursions, for instance, that often cross paths with dolphins; there are also three-hour trips in Maui that star Hawaiian green sea turtles. From December through April, meanwhile, whale-watching adventures shed light on thousands of humpback whales that have migrated to Hawaii from cold Alaskan waters.
