We went through a pod of a couple hundred spinner dolphins. It was amazing!!! I would have paid just to experience that alone. But we went out snorkeling in calm waters at the first stop. You see most of the fish you see in Finding Nemo. I'm a bit unsure of the water and using snorkeling equipment in general. But the crew onboard was very helpful. I had a panic attack at the next stop because the waves were pushing me towards the boat. Besides that scare, I had a great, fun time. If I am ever in Maui again, I for sure am going to do this tour again.

What a great experience. We made three stops on the Island of Lanai. All three were excellent with unique fish, coral and sea life. The crew was very friendly and knowledgeable about Hawaiian history and lore. The boat is comfortable with plenty of room for each person. This boat goes to the lesser traveled Island so we never saw another boat of snorkelers. High recommend this experience.

The crew was awesome! Extremely accommodating and friendly, very impressed. They went out of their way to find us the best snorkeling spots and told us more about Lanai. I would highly recommend this company to everyone who is looking to snorkel in a small group and feel safe.

Loved that this was a smaller boat (we had 17 on our dolphin tour) and the guides were great. We were the only boat in the areas we went (3 spots, the second was the best), so it didn't feel so touristy. Lunch was good and liked the BYOB on the ride back. Great experience!

The whale watching adventure was excellent. Not only did we see whales, we also saw dolphins. It was great. Guides were great. Boat ride smooth. HIGHLY RECOMMEND DOING THIS. Can't wait to go back to Hawaii again.

We had the most amazing experience! Don't waste your time on the larger boats. Everyone can get a clear view of the whales. The guides are far more informative and we learned a lot on our trip. Toward the end of the trip just by chance we got to watch a momma teaching her baby the ways of the world for a good 10mins. It was phenomenal!!

This was an AMAZING experience! We saw multiple whales and the guides were very informative and fun! The boat was beautiful and we even received a voucher for a free lunch at Down the Hatch afterwards which had great food. We HIGHLY recommend using Makai adventures during your time in Maui!!!

The crew was super nice and knowledgable and offered us the use of an extendable GoPro handle for our camera. Got us close to the whales, too.

From Our Editors

The People

Makai Adventures is a locally owned business built around a small team of full-time Hawaii residents, whose wisdom about the area, Hawaiian history, and marine life shines through on every adventure. All captains are licensed by the US Coast Guard, and the entire team is First Aid- and CPR-certified.

The Fleet

There are two main vessels, including Kainalu (Ocean Wave). This custom-designed boat was built for small-group whale watching and snorkeling adventures, and it comes complete with cushioned seating. Kainani (Beautiful Ocean), meanwhile, is a 43-foot Beneteau Oceanis that carries up to six people during sunset sails, snorkeling charters, and more.

The Adventures

The adventure you choose depends on what you want to see—and also how long you want to be out on the water. There are six-hour snorkeling excursions, for instance, that often cross paths with dolphins; there are also three-hour trips in Maui that star Hawaiian green sea turtles. From December through April, meanwhile, whale-watching adventures shed light on thousands of humpback whales that have migrated to Hawaii from cold Alaskan waters.
