About Bruce Ornstein Acting Workshop

What services does your business offer and what makes your business stand out from the competition?

The classes consist of exercise work, which leads scene work and scene study. I focus on students as creative beings, using the constant expansion of our imagination as well connecting with our impulses to fuel our ability to act. The classes are relatively small, which unlike institutional settings, allows for individual attention.

What was the inspiration to start or run this business?

Now in its 22nd year, the Bruce Ornstein Acting Workshop began with a desire to have a class that was fun and invigorating, while simultaneously focusing on the Artist within us all.

What do you love most about your job?

What I like is to be able to see what a student needs, and be able to recognize those needs, to help bring their work to the next level. Regardless of your level of experience, or whether or not you have a desire for a career as an actor, the classes will allow you to expand yourself in your ability to create, which can often be a major empowering and even life-changing event as well.

Bruce is a really great teacher and takes the time to work with people individually. His criticism is helpful not judgmental.

If you like only getting 5 minutes to act in a 3 hour class where most of it is devoted to non-acting activity (like running around screaming for the 1st hour and then talking about the biggest shame in your REAL life for the next hour), then this is the place for you. Acting teachers that make acting class into weird pop-psychology experiences are usually pretty messed up themselves. And I knew it was time to go when he was unreachable for 2 the two weeks my scene partner and I called him to get a scene to rehearse and then he threw my scene partner under the bus and said something like, "Do you think she is going to hold up her end of the responsibility?" to which I replied that she and I had been in complete communication and both of us had tried to reach him, and he had been the one who flaked. I have been acting for 20 years and wanted to get into a nice fun acting class and this was just not it. Also, beware when an acting teacher makes statements like, "If you really care about your career, you will do ______________." And the blank is something that in your gut the teacher should not be asking for. Statements like that are manipulation and work especially well with young, enthusiastic students who want to give the entertainment industry their all. Sadistic people in the entertainment industry know this and will use this... So just be careful.
