I'm glad I found the UYF. People there are very nice, the space is perfect, and the class was amazing.

From Our Editors

Urban Yoga Foundation's founder Ghylian Bell believes "communities will change when the people in them change." Through yoga and her organization's outreach efforts, she hopes to inspire that transformation in her community in Harlem, uniting its residents and motivating them to achieve mind-body wellness and awareness.

Nestled within an 1893 brownstone on historic Strivers Row, students bend and stretch through classes facing a grand mahogany fireplace ablaze with candlelight. Certified in kids' yoga, Bell also leads wee ones and teens in laying the foundation for a lifetime of wellness and nutrition. She also lent her expertise on a documentary about yoga in the public-school system, in which she bends all the rules. More than just a place to hone downward-facing dogs, Ghylian reaches out to her community via organizations such as the Girl Scouts of the USA, the "I Love Africa" AIDS awareness movement, and various afterschool programs.

New York City Gym And Fitness Center Guide

Living in New York City means city-dwellers have the high life at their fingertips almost 24/7. Sometimes, though, living it up can take a real toll, and weight loss can be hard when one lives down the street from five top-notch restaurants. That's why New York City gyms are so important; the city has some of the best places for New York City fitness.

At New York City Pilates, getting fit is never boring. This trendy full-body workout has scores of devotees in the five boroughs. Uptown Pilates, multiple Citysearch winner for best Pilates in the city, is a second-floor studio for the serious student. The instructors are among the most experienced in the state, and they help clients create a personalized Pilates experience that helps them push their individual boundaries.

For those who want to take charge of their own workout, a traditional NYC gym is a great place to lift weights, ride stationary bikes, and get fit. Locals have been going wild for NYC Crunch, a full-service gym with multiple locations in Manhattan and Brooklyn. In addition to the standard free weights, machines, treadmills, and pull-up bars, Crunch offers a number of high-intensity classes. Try one of their unique trainer-led sessions, like pogo stick or hula-hoop workouts.

Sometimes, one just needs to cool down and find their center. New York City's yoga studios are some of the best in the world. One of the most popular yoga classes is located right in the center of beautiful Central Park. Private sessions occur there throughout the week, but daily public sessions are led by Open Air Yoga throughout the week. Balance and strengthen the body and mind with a group of dozens at NYC's most famous oasis.

There's no one right way to meet fitness goals in NYC. Whether it’s relieving stress with yoga or pumping iron, find a favorite method and stick with it!
