About Malbec Restaurant NYC

The entryway to Malbec and Tango House is lined with planks taken from Argentinean wine cases. This is but a taste of the South American experience that defines the first-floor eatery (Malbec) and the lower-level performance venue downstairs (Tango House). It's a vibe that begins with the Buenos Aires–inspired decor, detours through an upscale Argentinean menu and wine list, and shines through during live tango performances held three nights a week.

But Chef Rodrigo Sieiro knows that Argentine cuisine isn't just about one country. "In Buenos Aires, the food is about immigration ... We are a mixture of cultures," Chef Sieiro told The Wall Street Journal, "and that's what I want to represent." His resulting Malbec and Tango House menus blend French, Italian, and Spanish influences into distinctly Argentine dishes, such as empanadas and dry-aged strip steaks.

Thursday through Saturday, dancing couples, musicians, and singers—including many Buenos Aires natives—take to Tango House's stage for a performance originally choreographed in Argentina more than 12 years ago. As the performers proceed with through their intricate routines, patrons sip cocktails, glasses of wine, or juice boxes of freshly squeezed malbec grapes.

Wow, what a great show! We had dinner first upstairs at Malbec, the associated restaurant, which was good. A little pricey, but about what you'd expect. Then we went downstairs for the show and we were absolutely blown away. The experience was so authentic, I felt like I'd gone through a worm hole and was sitting in a supper club in Buenos Aires. The dancers, musicians, and singer were amazing. Some numbers were fun and flirty, others were so deeply sensual that I felt almost like a voyeur. We had a cheese plate with our wine during the show, which was good. My only complaint would be that the chairs weren't comfortable. But once the show started, I pretty much forgot about that!

Get your drinks early as there is only one busy bartender.

Try to sit as close to the stage as possible - noise in the back can interfere with your viewing experience. We had a loud group of 8 people constantly talking during the performance and they kept ignoring our multiple requests to be quiet, even when a hostess came over and asked to keep it down on our behalf (she should have just thrown them out but she was too nice)
