About this Business
From Our Editors
When Lee Zalben started Peanut Butter & Co., he had no idea he would change the face of an industry. Using only USA-grown peanuts from sustainable peanut farms, Lee began creating gourmet peanut butter for the unique sandwiches sold at his Greenwich Village shop, but it soon became clear that the demand for quality peanut butter justified a much larger operation. Today, his peanut butter is sold in more than 15,000 stores around the country.
The peanut butter's success may be due to what it lacks as much as what it has: it's dairy-free, gluten-free, and Non-GMO, and it contains no hydrogenated oils, trans fats, or high-fructose corn syrup. The company's 10 peanut-butter flavors, from Cinnamon Raisin Swirl and Dark Chocolate Dreams to Mighty Maple, are all vegan except for one. The rapid growth of the company is matched by the growth of its menu, which now boasts jams and jellies, nuts, and baking mixes to accompany its mainstay: all-natural, flavored peanut butter. Regular customers can show their affection by sporting brand gear such as t-shirts or totes.
