Though the hardworking team at this Upper West Side business may be described as simple dressmakers, Silhouettes & Profiles does so much more. Founded by Irene Tcherniakhovsky, this sunny shop provides all manner of alteration and restoration services, with expert tailors working with all fabric – from lace to leather – and altering everything from underwear to fur coats. Silhouettes & Profiles also designs its own line of clothing for sale in the store and online; concepts involve mixing modern styles with vintage materials in new, fresh ways. And if you buy one of these custom pieces, alteration is included in the price. Silhouettes & Profiles works with New York designers like Jason Wu and Rodarte to fit models for collections at New York Fashion Week, and even altered Natalie Portman’s tutus for the film Black Swan.
