As would be expected in a Sichuan restauran,t the food was much tastier than in many other Chinese eateries. Maybe a couple of dishes were cooked in too much oil. It appears to be popular with tour groups.

First impressions aren’t that great, tbh. It’s in a strip mall, next to Ranch 99, and the lighting and décor are pretty plain. They accommodate tour buses of tourists but I didn’t have a problem with that – I enjoyed watching the tourists! Had two things that I’ve had often – green onion pancakes and ma-po tofu – and thought they were both very good. The waiter was friendly and understood that everything had to be vegetarian. Was shocked when I got the check – the ma-po tofu was only $7 and the pancake was $3.50! I'm also giving them 2/5 Green Stars for social and environmental impact, based on these reasons: • Main disappointment was that the to-go box was Styrofoam, which is pretty much the worst type of packaging for food to go (non-recyclable, high carbon-footprint, and made from a toxic monomer). • Pretty good selection of vegetarian options. • No information provided on food sourcing. • Note to staff: please ditch the Styrofoam boxes – it’s the worst!

I initially wrote this review under Little Sichuan Express years ago by mistake! This was supposed to be for Little Sichuan. In 2010 my wife (who is from Sichuan) and I moved to Fremont, lived there for a year, and went to Little Sichuan often. Very friendly staff, who we got to know. Amazing dishes and a very wide variety of them. At one point they asked my wife if she were interested in trying a new dish that they were experimenting with, "Spicy Fish in hot oil with bean jelly", before it was on the menu. It was amazing, and we ordered it all the time. The complex mix of peanuts, spicy oil, fish, bean jelly, and fresh scallions is fantastic, in terms of tastes, textures, and smell. Now it is on the menu. I love the dry spicy green beans and the boneless spicy chicken as well. Entire tour buses full of people from China come to this place on a regular basis. I once saw a tour bus of 50 people leave just as a second tour bus of 50 turned up, and all 100 were all served while we were still eating our meal.

Looking for a different dinner tonight and since it was a gorgeous night out I decided to stroll down Newark Street and see what was available. About 2 blocks from the Courtyard hotel is a strip shopping center that is populated with all the Chinese shops and restaurants one would want; restaurants, hair and nail salons, bakery, grocery store, etc., etc. I chose Little Sichuan from the outside and because I prefer it to Hunan. Ambiance is authentic Chinese which means all the signs and menus are in Chinese. Menus are in English as well. Tables are built for families as are the portions. My server spoke very little English do I was reduced to pointing at the menu which worked fine....except for the sizes. My small Hot and Sour soup was in a tub which could have easily served 6. The order of food did not come out as I would have expected but remember this is authentic. The Fried rice came first instead of the soup. That came second. Then my Crispy Spicy Beef arrived. The food was delicious and certainly among the best Chinese I've had. I attempted to eat with the chopsticks but should have taken the fork when it was offered. It's a busy, clean and spacious place with rap music coming from the kitchen! Bring friends if you go! Or be prepared to carry out what you can't eat. Enjoy!
