Read the fine print at the very end of the fine print. Stated my $60 Groupon could only be used with a table for 4, not 2.. They did offer to apply $30 to dinner and gave me a $30 voucher to return. My schnitzel was dry and the meat was of low quality. Good bread

The food and service was great. The food is eastern European. My husband had the Serbian Goulash and it was the moist tender meat and so delicious! The sauerkraut was different than the regular variety and it was amazing. Highly recommend and we look forward to returning!

My wife and I went there for dinner on a Thursday and were the only patrons. They ask that reservations be made, so that on nights like we went, if business is slow - they might close early. Wait staff and owner were very friendly. Fresh baked bread, cheese, and apple were nice while waiting on the entrees. I had the chicken breasts with a paprika sauce which was very good. My wife had the Vienna steak (a NY strip steak blanketed in sauteed onions) which she was so so about (a texture thing).

Great variety of primarily Eastern European dishes. Service was excellent. We even had a Czech waitress. expect lower price dishes with regular portion sizes (Brat Wurst has one Braut, etc.) but higher priced dishes more than regular portion size (Roasted Duck comes as a half a roasted duck). The duck was done very well with crispy skin and low fat content. Tried a small piece of the Pork Special and it had a high salt content. Its more of a sit down place, table cloths, monastery ambience, although a bit too much stuff on table. I would go back to try other dishes, then make a fuller assessment. Can't imagine how the eastern style mushy sauerkraut would carry, which comes with almost every dish, so I would say no to take out. I would give it a thumbs up for a small town (Norfolk) eatery as I am partial to San Francisco, Boston, New York, Chicago, London, Paris, Munich, Rome (bigger city) dining fare.

I looked at the food descriptions on their website before we went, but our server was very helpful explaining the dishes to us. The owner came out to greet us and made us feel very welcome! This is the perfect place for a date night.

From Our Editors

Wall sconces cast warm light across the exposed brick walls at Monastery Restaurant, where guests dine on European cuisine at small, candle-lit tables. Owners Anna and Adolf Jerabek first opened a restaurant in New York City after leaving their native Czechoslovakia in 1967, and later journeyed to Virginia to open their Old World eatery at the current downtown Norfolk locale. There, they serve breaded port cutlet with Lyonnaise potatoes and steamed broccoli, and veal-stuffed cabbage with dumplings. A painting of a portly monk with a half-finished beer hangs behind the bar, where visitors can enjoy selections from the drink list?wine, beer, champagne, and cocktails?or jump up on the wall to act like the portly monk.
