This is a different type of massage, largely done with roller rather than the Swedish hands on technique. I found it a little too choppy. Having to get up off the table to go into the sauna interrupted the flow. I was looking forward to having nearly an hour of being totally passive and having my whole body lovingly kneaded. Felt like I was being rushed. Indeed, the masseuse did double duty as a manicurist for another client immediately following my massage.

From Our Editors

The first thing many people notice about Sheilah Collins is her chatty demeanor, but the owner of Selah the Art of Beauty has more to offer than a friendly conversation. In her nearly 20 years of industry experience, she has also come to appreciate the importance of quiet relaxation. She and her team of technicians do everything in their power to promote a stress-free and rewarding spa experience, using organic and vitamin-based products during their calming facial treatments and painting nails with specialty Shellac polishes that resist chipping. The spa?s massage therapists strive to meet the high bar set by their counterparts, unwinding tension and repairing shoulders? antiquated, steam-powered gears with Swedish, deep-tissue, and hot-stone techniques.

Philadelphia Day Spa Guide

Whether it is eradicating dead skin cells and unwanted body hair or adding color and nourishment, Philadelphia’s spas come equipped to handle almost any skin concern. And the best spas in Philly do so by either personalizing their treatments or calling on unusual ingredients.

For a skin treatment all your own, head over to Rescue Rittenhouse Spa, where an aesthetician will analyze your skin to create a customized facial that could include cleansing, extractions, a signature lifting facial massage, or high-tech tools such as microdermabrasion and electrical microcurrents. The spa’s owner and aesthetician, Danuta Mieloch, is so good at what she does that her spa won the facial category in Philadelphia Magazine's Best of Philly awards for the last three years. Below-the-shoulder skin care that’s gaining press recognition in the pages of Philadelphia Style comes from [Juju Organics, where exfoliating body treatments made with salt and sugar remove dead skin cells and improve texture before massages with organic essential oils and hydrosols help detoxify the skin.

Skin smoothing treatments don’t always involve a scrub. At Body Restoration, aestheticians use what they call “the Cadillac of waxes” to remove unwanted hair from the body. They peel away a strip-free, blue hard wax to gently remove coarse hair from sensitive areas such as the face, underarms, and bikini area, and use strips with a creamy, soft wax for the legs, arms, back, and chest. Allure particularly adored the swiftness of their services, along with the apricot-kernel oil the specialists use afterward to calm any inflammation.

Smooth, soft skin is the perfect spot for an even, natural looking tan and 3000 BC is the perfect spot to get one. Once named the “Best All Around Spa” by Vogue, the spa turns sunless tanning into a luxurious treatment that includes full-body exfoliation and a stint in an aromatherapy-infused shower. Once your body is prepped and ready, a professional applies a sunless tanning lotion from Skin Glow that bronzes the complexion with an added dose of nourishment.

For an inundation of pampering, head over to the Four Season’s Hotel Spa, where the Four Seasons in One treatment takes clients through four blissful skincare experiences designed to represent winter, spring, summer, and fall. The service includes a cooling back scrub followed by a warming floral wrap. Afterwards, a blend of Lomi Lomi and Thai massages furthers relaxation with a burst of aromatherapy. Reflexology for the feet and a finishing herbal scalp treatment crown the head-to-toe experience.
