Mary Coyle, a Phoenix institution since 1951, prides itself on mixing its ice cream the old-fashioned way—right on the premises. But that doesn't stop the shop from coming up with new ways to sell the treat. Alongside cones, shakes, and floats, it piles ice cream high for towering Showboats such as the Cookie Man, which drizzles chocolate and marshmallow toppings and crushed cookies over several scoops of cookies 'n' cream ice cream. Even more tantalizing, a 4-pound, up-to-6-flavor bowl of ice cream known as The Hill is designed for adventurous patrons, while the 11-pound, up-to-13-flavor Grand Canyon invites parties to put their heads together and see who can stave off brain freeze the longest.
