About The Well

Built in Richmond's first high-rise apartment building and named for the artesian well that once provide water to its tenants, The Well carries on the edifice's history of welcoming visitors. The restaurant, owned and run by the same family that owned Cous Cous, exudes a comfortable retro feel, with recycled wooden doors supporting the bar and an old jukebox in the corner. The food, however, is not stuck in the past: the menu consists of classic dishes imbued with inventive twists, like shrimp po boy sandwiches with soubise and spiced aioli, and roasted beet sliders topped with fried pickles. Specialty drinks are named for staff members' canine friends, meaning patrons don't actually have to swallow hair from their own dogs.

Beers on tap were poor selection; menu items were a little too eclectic. What we ordered was good but there was nothing we wanted to order (we would have left had we not had the groupon). Great happy hour though!

Limited menu, small portions, although reasonably priced. Quaint atmosphere with historic Richmond charm. Would like to see the menu expanded, since I can always supplement small entree size with that yummy spoon bread.

We were brought the wrong order (salmon entree vs. salmon salad), but we were not familiar enough with the dishes to realize our server's mistake, but were surprised when we saw the more expensive bill.

Ordered a proscuitto wrapped cod special at the suggestion of my server. For $15 the portion was very small and the fish was inedibly dry. I ate the accompanying potatoes and wilted arugula (nothing spectacular), but only a few bites of the fish. I mentioned to the waitress that it was pretty dry, for which she apologized. However, she never offered to get me something else for dinner, nor did she discount or comp the fish from my check. I paid $15 for something I didn't eat and didn't like. Not impressed.
