About Douglas J Aveda Institute

Even the most successful entrepreneurs have to start somewhere. For Douglas Weaver, that somewhere was a basement. In 1967, he opened his first salon with a staff of six, performing beauty treatments in a space located below an arcade in East Lansing. Their talents attracted a following, though, allowing Douglas and his team to expand into a proper salon in Okemos after just a few years. Today, the Douglas J Salons empire includes an entire family of Aveda concept salons and schools sprinkled throughout Michigan, Illinois, and Tennessee.

At the Royal Oak location, professional stylists and aestheticians perform a diverse selection of treatments using Aveda's naturally derived products. This includes everything from custom cuts and color to makeup applications, as well as spa services like Elemental Nature facials and hot-stone massages.

No longer Aveda, was Aveda when I purchased. I was told they changed in October 25. I did not know and only found out because my face was burning and continued to for 24 hours. The student was nice & professional but I believe she got thrown off by my skins reaction so forgot to steam (I never had it) and also to extract until I reminded her. I tipped her nicely, not really her fault and she was trying to soothe my red burning skin with leftover Aveda products. A different new product caused a tickle in my throat, the new line has strong scents (they smelled good to me but didn’t agree with me). I have had facials here and elsewhere and NEVER had this experience. I was friendly to the staff as they were to me but the teacher basically told me their products were not for me which I agree. Eminence is the new product line & many like it so just be careful.

The staff and facility were pleasant and welcoming. The laid back atmosphere was the most positive part of the experience if you're looking for a 1 - 2 hour escape from everyday stress. I liked that, but someone in a hurry probably would not. The quality of the facial was average while the enthusiasm of the student was commendable. If half stars were available I would have rated it 3.5
