Better Than Mama's, Salem

Fast-casual food is just about the only box Better Than Mama's fits in—beyond that, it defies categorization. The eatery began as a hobby: the founders would mix ingredients and culinary influences to make new dips, salsas, and chips for gatherings. Friends and family members found these creations so addictive that they persuaded Better Than Mama's to sell to the masses at local farmers' markets.

Their wasabi salsa verde and balsamic caramelized-onion dip proved popular enough to lead to a brick-and-mortar location. At this counter-service restaurant, friendly staffers sling sandwiches, salads, soups, and tacos that fuse American, Latin, and Asian flavors. (Many are amped up to 11 with the addition of a signature dip.) Diners rave about the Korean cheesesteak, which twists the traditional philly with marinated beef, kimchi, and black sesame seeds. Guests also devour bowls of totchos—tater-tot nachos—that come topped with cheese, pico de gallo, sriracha aioli, bacon, and an optional fried egg. This adventurous fusion of flavors has paid off. Better Than Mama's was awarded Gold in Best New Restaurant in 2017 and Gold for Best Cheap Eats in 2018 in the Best of the Mid-Valley 2018 reader's poll.
