Collard greens to die for but food took long time so took off a star. Would definitely come back for tasty food.

Thanks to Groupon, I've found this restaurant. The restaurant is a casual setting and the food is superb, neither too spicy nor too mild, but really good. Even though my first Groupon visit was at least a year ago (maybe more by now), I've been back several times and have never had a bad experience.

The flavors were amazing!! There were four of us in my party and we all tried different plates. Everyone enjoyed what they selected so, I would have to say, whatever you decide to try...you won't be disappointed. Oh! If you are not a big ginger fan, there is a beverage that contains ginger, hibiscus, pineapple, and one other ingredient but, ginger is very dominant over the other ingredients. A must try appetizer are the sambusa. You'll get to sample 7 different stuffed fillo like rapped fillings! Overall, it was an awesome experience!

Wait time for food is a little on the slow side, but the nice thing was that we didn't have to follow the specifications of the Groupon (1 appetizer up to $4.99, etc). Instead they let us take the overall value of those things which was around $44 I believe and order whatever we wanted for that credit, and if we went over, we would pay that difference. We were able to get the Sambusas, Jungle Fries, Sweet Jerk Chicken, and the Goat :) All of them were delicious!

Flavors are very good, service is great. Be warned that they over cook their meats and undercook the vegetables, so order your food accordingly.

From Our Editors

June Owino remembers growing up in a small Kenyan town where, he claims, "we didn't have a choice but to cook for ourselves." He started out with basic prep work, learning how to chop and waffle-cut onions and tomatoes, but he steadily learned more of his mother's and grandmother's techniques for forging fragrantly spiced African stews with turmeric and curry-seasoned salts. After immigrating to San Diego, June decided to re-create these distinctive recipes and incorporate some of his own culinary inspirations, eventually founding Flavors of East Africa as a way to share his Kenyan-inspired menu of meat, vegetarian, and vegan dishes.

As related in a rave review from the San Diego Reader, the restaurant immerses diners in the sights, sounds, and smells of Kenya, with the dining room's lemon-yellow walls brimming with African arts, crafts, and cooking utensils. From time to time, the chefs also take their cuisine beyond the restaurant, hawking curries and stews at local farmers' markets and using their food’s enthralling aroma to lure chupacabras from out of hiding.
