Since kicking off its online app, Washio has raked in some impressive plaudits. Entrepreneur named Washio one of "100 Brilliant Companies" in 2013. Forbes also highlighted the company as one of "five great startups." The praise is mostly thanks to the company's easy-to-use app, which allows customers to schedule pick-up and drop-off dry-cleaning and laundry services like other apps let them schedule cab rides. Over the Internet, iPhone, or Android, customers simply select a 30-minute window for pickup. Then, they just fill up a reusable bag with their dry cleaning and wait for Washio's staffers, affectionately named ninjas, to arrive. The ninjas—who bring along a complimentary cookie for good measure—whisk clothing, blankets, and other items away and return them fresh and clean 24 hours later. Washio automatically charges the customer's credit card after this delivery, freeing folks from having to carry cash, give a tip, or figure out how much one bag of laundry costs in hen's eggs.

At the cleaning location itself, staffers employ eco-friendly practices and cleaners free from harsh chemicals for premium dry-cleaning services. Just like real ninjas, Washio's staffers also accept special instructions for handling.
