Very good instructors

This place is a travesty. The barn is filthy, grounds are covered in manure and the horses look poorly cared for. We bought 2 one-hour lessons. After starting 15 minutes late the kids were kept standing in the sun for 45 minutes and were never allowed to ride. The owner was incredibly rude and refused a refund or make up class. We did not return for the second “class”

TERRIBLE!!! Do consider this Groupon! Poor customer service, and things were not communicated well. The owner has truly left me with a bad impression.

Great experience for my 6 year old. The ponies and instructors were so patient and safety was stressed and they loan the required hats ( I hear these are expensive to buy) but the pony Misty was so sweet It is a farm in the middle of town so to speak only 15 minutes from DC and we will be back in the spring

I paid for the Clay Hill Stables and was unable to use my Groupon. I am not able to to give feedback. The phone was down during the last week and my Groupon expired.

My husband took our daughter for her first horseback riding lesson and pulled up to an overgrown and dilapidated looking facility. There was a handwritten note that said "groupon visitors this way" that led to the side of a house. If I had taken my daughter myself, I probably would have turned around and left. The lesson mostly involved brushing the horses and short time actually riding. Scheduling the session was also a hassle with many emails back and forth with the coordinator. Our second lesson was rained out, and we didn't bother trying to reschedule. I understand the the cost is appealing, but the whole experience was sketchy at best.

From Our Editors

Since founding Clay Hill Stables in 1964, British Horse Society–certified instructor Emmie Prettyman has passed her vast equine expertise on to legions of horses and their riders through a variety of services. Emmie captains a team of instructors certified to teach the English style of riding as well as administer first aid and CPR, ensuring safe and sound lessons for students as young as 6. Beginner classes work to establish fundamentals both on and off the saddle, including riding positions and basic grooming and tacking. Once riders have demonstrated proficiency at the paces of walk, trot, and canter, they may be eligible for the jumping work in the intermediate/advanced class, where they build on skills with more intricate flatwork and jumping exercises, as well as have the opportunity for trail rides and horse shows.
