Tampa resident and history lover Lonnie Herman’s longtime fascination with history has evolved into a broad expertise about the area's vibrant streets where newspapers are printed in three languages. The personable former executive also has the gift of being an evocative storyteller. This convergence of interest and talents resulted in Lonnie's company, Ybor City Historic Walking Tours. The guides' upbeat narration carry small groups down vibrant 7th Avenue with detailed anecdotes that reveal the complex past behind Ybor City's cigar factories, Columbia Restaurant, and the story of the eponymous Vicente Martinez-Ybor, who founded the city as a place to store his statues of himself.

Our tour leader and principal was knowledgeable, courteous, professional and a delight. He answered questions with details only a person who have delved into the locale's history (and who talked to descendants) would know. While my wife and I had been in parts of the area previous to the tour, we experienced areas we did not know, and the guide's nuances, story-telling, and insights enabled us to appreciate Ybor City even more especially sine my mother grew up there, and my grandfather was a cigar maker, and probably worked in one of the many factories that dotted the neighborhood. We highly recommend this tour and its merchant. I doubt if anyone would be disappointed. We also liked that the tour ended at the area's chamber/historical center.
