I have completed 3 out of 4 classes in Sewing FUNdamentals 1. I've never known how to use a sewing machine, since taking this class series I've learned a lot. Bonus: the instructor is very nice !

Knowledgeable instructors, and the shop provides you with everything you need. I have since enrolled in a second course.

Beware when registering for a class online: once you submit your info, DO NOT hit the back button or close your browser before confirming, you will not be able to register because the system will mark your Groupon voucher as used.

The heat and humidity is INTOLERABLE. No air conditioning. With a small room filled with lint, sweaty people, humming sewing machines and steaming irons, air conditioning should be required. Also, supplies for classes are technically available anywhere but there is strong pressure to purchase them at The Make Den. Also, they list more fabric than what is actually needed to create some of the projects, requiring you to buy more than necessary. I don't think this is accidental. One project alone required a half yard of fabric and then day of class, instructor said, "no. We will be using scraps from the scrap bin. You don't need any fabric." Another student asked why she was told to buy this (what we were all thinking) and the instructor just kinda shrugged and changed the subject. Time management of classes is poor. Instructors on their phones sometimes. Most projects are not finished at class end. Then you are encouraged to come to a makeup class and pay even more money for that. I will say most of the people I met are nice. But if you are looking for a professional operation, look elsewhere. I can't think of a single solitary thing that is professional about this place. Staff attire, quality of supplies, condition of machines, cleanliness, music selection, customer service, they don't even have a phone!!! Shame. It would take so little to change the majority of the issues.

This place is great. The instructors really know what they're doing and are very supportive and helpful. I've done a few subsequent workshops since. They always seem to have something new to offer there.

So much fun! One could argue that you coudl learn online, but the teachers are so helpful and the workshop environment is so much nicer than my home set-up

There is no continuity re teachers. Different instructor each class so far. Could not access the pdf info they had sent and then given to me to get from their website. Very pricey for little instruction.

From Our Editors

Alison Broverman of the National Post reported that "sewing machine phobia melts away" in The Make Den's studio. There, in a space resembling a 1950s kitchen, founder and Ryerson University grad Irene Stickney interweaves sound sewing principles and time-saving tricks into her workshops. Subjects range from an initial, embroidered letter of introduction to sewing techniques and the otherworldly style of Lady Gaga. Several of the Den's instructors can also be seen gliding through the streets of the city in their own outrageous, hand-sewn matching creations as members of the Deadly Nightshades fashion-and-cycling posse.
