When Wayne Mitchell started his first store in 1959, guitars were not his original aim. His small Hollywood store specialized in appliances and organs for its first five years until VOX asked Wayne to sell its line of guitars and amplifiers in 1964. As the era of free love ended and the 1970's arrived, six-strings and amps became the store's hottest sellers encouraging Wayne to rechristen his shop, Guitar Center. The 1980's brought Hair Bands into the forefront and helped Guitar Center open a new location on a yearly basis. The grunge era of the 1990's saw that number spike to an average of 7 a year, as all things guitar became more popular!
