Don't go during the winter months, it's beautiful but it was also 20 degrees with a nasty wind.

The Groupon was not at all clear on whether it was a daytime or nighttime tour, but based on the photo that was used, it made it look like a nighttime tour, so I bought it. The day versus night tours are very, very different, and most people going to an observatory will want to see the stars, which is only done at night, obviously. When I called Kitt Peak to find out what my Groupon actually entailed, it turned out to only be for a daytime tour. I used it anyway and stayed there for an hour past the tour to go to a nighttime tour, which is what I really wanted to attend. The "fine print" needed to be much clearer. I'd recommend Kitt Peak spell it out next time on whether the Groupon is for day or night tours. On a positive note, my night tour was awesome and I loved every second of it. I'm planning to go back for more night tours and am considering being a volunteer, if they'll have me after this complaint. Haha. I think it's a great facility and I'm passionate about space exploration and astronomy.

From Our Editors

High above the Sonoran desert, on the Tohono O'odham Reservation, the Kitt Peak National Observatory keeps track of the night sky with the world's largest collection of independent telescopes. Throughout the day, guides lead tours of three of the behemoths, including the world's largest solar telescope and a historic gazing dome built in 1973 to broadcast the moon explorers’ games of golf. On those chilly desert evenings, visitors can take part in the nightly observing program and view distant planets and far-off galaxies through 20- and 16-inch telescopes. Reservations are recommended; the program is quite popular and stars tend to shyly hide behind comets around large groups.
