Excellent experience we got to look at the sun through a solar telescope! Just a shame the large 4m scope was out of action.

We loved it! A bit far out of Tucson but worth the drive. The Observatory is educational and the tours are great. The guide was fantastic. The drive up the mountain was beautiful and the weather is considerably cooler than in Tucson. The only thing we didn't like was that you can not buy food there. So, if you're planning a day out there, bring your own lunch.

Be sure to know how to drive mountain roads. Elevation is 6700 ft. and it's worth the view. Only did one tour during the day and it was informative. Won't drive up there for any night events.

All 3 of the day tours were informative and the docent handled the questions well. I am an engineer with a solar-watching hobby and found the tour of the solar observatory interesting and I learned some things.

Kitt Peak was an amazing experience. The drive up alone I would give 5 stars, but the staff is very knowledgeable and approachable. I would recommend it to anyone and everyone even remotely interested in Astronomy.

The guide was more interested in talking about his life than the observatory, very long winded. Might have been better off just walking around on our own The actual observatory itself was cool to see. Would be better if they had a movie that shows what you can see through the telescopes.

A beautiful view from about 7000 feet. It's wonderful to learn the history of of the building of the observatory and to go inside the building where the scientists work. There's even a picnic area nearby!

From Our Editors

High above the Sonoran desert, on the Tohono O'odham Reservation, the Kitt Peak National Observatory studies the universe with the world's largest collection of telescopes. Throughout the day, volunteers lead tours of three of the telescopes, including the world's largest solar telescope. On those chilly desert evenings, visitors can choose from one of three nighttime programs according to interest level. Many take part in the Nightly Observing Program and view the Moon, distant planets and far-off galaxies through 20- and 16-inch telescopes. Advance reservations are required for all nighttime programs. Visit www.noao.edu/kpvc for details.
