About Komi
Komi: A User's Guide
Modern Greek Cuisine | Set Multicourse Tasting Menu | James Beard Award–Winning Chef | Optional Wine Pairings
Sample Menu: Here's the thing—there is no menu. Komi only offers a set multicourse tasting dinner (at a set price) with optional wine pairings. Meals begin with a series of mezzethakia, or small, light dishes, and progress into heartier plates, including pasta, a family-style entree, and dessert. For your part, all the chefs ask for is trust.
Who's in the Kitchen? Johnny Monis is a secretive and celebrated culinary mastermind. In 2013, he won the James Beard Foundation's award for Best Chef: Mid-Atlantic. When he won its award for Best New Chef six years earlier, Monis told Food & Wine magazine that his favorite customer is “anyone who comes in and just asks us to cook for them." To Monis and his staff, that's a major compliment.
When to Go: Visit Komi when you have time to spare. Meals here are lengthy, with servers delivering course after course in an edible parade that typically lasts several hours.
Inside Tips
- First: no cameras. Aside from the occasional snapshot with a fan, Chef Monis outlaws pictures to protect his photo-shy creations.
- Second: make reservations. Komi accepts reservations starting one month—to the day—in advance of your visit. And with just a dozen or so tables available, space is at a premium. The reservation line is open from noon to 4 p.m. Tuesday–Saturday, and the restaurant can’t accommodate parties larger than four.
How to Get There: Attention drivers—there's no valet parking. Your best bet is to hop off the Metro at Dupont Circle's north exit and walk to Q Street. If you do drive, though, there's an underground public parking garage on P Street, halfway between 16th and 17th.
If You Can’t Make It, Try This: Little Serow (1511 17th Street NW), another venture from Chef Monis, is located right next door to Komi. It serves set, family-style Thai dinners.
