The principle behind Gyrotonic is simple: improved freedom of motion. Attaining that goal, however, involves borrowing movements and mechanics from a number of sources. Gyrotonic classes link breath to motion just as yoga does, emphasize posture and alignment similar to Pilates, and rely on slow, graceful stretches in a way that’s reminiscent of dancing. The ideas come together in one weight- and pulley-based piece of equipment that glides in circular––rather than straight––movements to increase joint mobility and circulation, as well as butter-churning skills. Because the exercises are low-impact and are taught in a progression, students of all ages and fitness levels can participate.
In addition to Gyrotonic classes, the certified and licensed instructors of GYROTONIC SATNAM lead Gyrokinesis classes––a class based on the same principles as Gyrotonic but without the equipment––and Kundalini yoga classes that emphasize meditation. The studio also moonlights as a clothing boutique and organic tea house.
