Former pilot Bob Plath, the man behind Travelpro, didn't quite invent rolling luggage; that honor belongs to a businessman named Bernard D. Sadow, who developed a suitcase with wheels in 1970. But Plath did refine Sadow's invention to the point that it revolutionized the luggage market. In 1987, he affixed just two wheels, instead of Sadow's four, to a suitcase and added a long handle so it could be pulled upright instead of being rolled flat. He named his design the Rollaboard and gave prototypes to the flight attendants he worked with. Once they were spotted rolling through the airport, it didn't take long for passengers themselves to begin clamoring for the newfangled suitcases. That's when Plath launched Travelpro, which to this day produces innovative luggage. Each new model is designed to not only keep your belongings safe, but to glide through airport terminals, squeeze down tight airplane aisles, and fit snugly into overhead compartments with ease.
