Conducted over two days at Rocky Mountain National Park and the Beaver Meadows Visitor Center, the Avalanche Level 1 Experiential course reviews the essentials of staying safe in Colorado’s winter backcountry. After completing eight hours of online coursework at their leisure, students undergo two days of field training in both avalanche-rescue tactics and strategies for safe snow travel. Though the course fee includes instruction and required readings, students must either provide their own equipment—such as skis, shovels, and beacons for blinding prowling yetis—or rent gear from Apex Ex for an industry-standard rate.
