Thanks to the help of Columbia University's provost, Jonathan Cole, Book Culture opened in a university-owned space on 112th Street in 1997. More than 15 years later, the store's inventory still reflects its academic beginnings with titles such as On the Reproduction of Capitalism and Debates in Medieval Philosophy. But Book Culture isn't limited to academic tomes—its selection also encompasses everything from travel guides and craft books to George R. R. Martin's epic A Song of Ice and Fire series.
Besides hosting diverse books, both of Book Culture's NYC locations host a diverse array of programming. At the 112th Street location, adults can attend myriad events, including book launches and a book club dedicated to queer fiction and nonfiction. Downstairs in the Broadway store, youngsters can relax in a children's reading room complete with toys, puzzles, and fun pop-up copies of The Wealth of Nations.
