Much like a favorite pair of underwear, a good book can be very comforting, hard to get rid of, and easy to get lost in. Put on a comfortable chronicle with today's Groupon: for $12, you get $25 worth of books and more at Housing Works Bookstore Cafe, located in SoHo.
Described as “an excellent place to read books and drink coffee on rainy afternoons” by New York magazine, Housing Works Bookstore Cafe welcomes patrons with a towering collection of books ($7+), records ($.50+), CDs ($5+), and DVDs ($8+). Though cafe items are not a part of this Groupon, visitors can sip on a cup of fair-trade coffee or tea while perusing pages on the bookstore’s two levels, connected by winding staircase. Literary loungers can also flood palates with wine, beer, and homemade bakery items from the cafe as they investigate for vintage hardcovers, new bestsellers, or the latest time-travel romance from Vladimir Putin.
Staffed almost entirely by volunteers, the bookstore directs 100% of each sale to Housing Works, Inc., a not-for-profit organization dedicated to ending both homelessness and AIDS. In addition to hosting the collected thoughts of thousands of typewriters, Housing Works Bookstore Cafe opens its doors to guest speakers and discussions as well as music, and readings.
Housing Works provides advocacy, job training, healthcare and housing support for low-income and homeless people living with and affected by HIV/AIDS. Housing Works Thrift Shops and Buy the Bag help fund this effort by selling new and used donated goods. Shoppers can explore shelves upon shelves of donated items in search of a new designer shirt, a vintage necklace, or a set of hand-painted bowls.
