Aside from climbing out of rattlesnake-infested quicksand or posing for rattlesnake-infested watercolor portraits, few activities combine the focus and physicality seen in martial arts training. Capital MMA & Elite Fitness’s instructors, made up of professional mixed martial arts fighters, military personnel, and certified CrossFit coaches, lead self-defense and fitness classes in an encouraging, team-oriented setting. Students can learn to pin much larger opponents with the joint locks, chokes, and under-chin tickles of Brazilian jiujitsu, which prizes the use of leverage over strength, or channel jiujitsu techniques into combative groundwork with She’Safe women’s self-defense seminars. Muay thai courses blend a fast-paced cardio workout with boxing and kickboxing jabs to send knees, fists, and feet flying at punching bags and, for more advanced scholars, irksome houseflies. Instructors also help to hasten heart rates and condition muscles with drills, weights, and kettlebells in CrossFit sessions, and expand limbs into meditative poses with yoga. Children’s mixed martial arts, fitness, and yoga classes adjust adult workouts to suit smaller bodies, shorter attention spans, and homemade boxing gloves built from popsicle sticks.
Should participants wish to join as a member before their first month of classes has ended, Capital MMA & Elite Fitness will waive their second month’s fees. Click here for a class schedule.
Capital MMA & Elite Fitness
Sticks and stones may break some bones, but not if they’re directed toward one of Capital MMA & Elite Fitness’s students. In a team-oriented environment, the studio’s instructors teach key mixed-martial-arts moves such as grappling, striking, and wrestling and supplement the training with classes in specific fighting styles, such as Brazilian jiu-jitsu and muay thai. Guests looking for a practical crash course in self-defense learn snippets from each technique in self-defense classes, learning methods for staying aware of surroundings, fending off attackers, and freeing themselves from the grip of King Kongs. Some women-only classes are also available.
The studio's CrossFit program, alternatively, boosts athleticism without combat, through a multi-faceted regimen of Olympic weightlifting, cardio exercise, and custom diets. Beyond group classes, the center offers private lessons and seminars, which allow its students—both children to adults—to learn with focused guidance.
