Racing is a popular past time among rats, hearts, and people who own lots of spandex. Rev up with today's Groupon: for $15, you get $30 worth of go-kart racing at Checkered Flag Raceway in Berlin.
Checkered Flag's 1/4 mile long, outdoor raceway challenges speedsters with three different types of go-karts for child ($6 per ride for non-members) and adult ($6.50 per ride for non-members) racers. Each four-minute run pits riders against one another while they publicly clock times on the raceway's computerized lap counter. Riders older than 16 and taller than 58" can strap into the Interceptor for a full-tilt racing experience involving a nine horsepower Honda engine, belt drive, and large slick tires. Meanwhile, pint-sized pedal pushers can climb into the Bomber, whose demur frame and smaller wheels scale safer driving down to size for children more than 56" tall. Adult drivers and child passengers older than 4 and taller than 38" can share the Tornado two-seater kart, which inspires family fun without the forced joviality of vacations to colonial settlements.
While the track buzzes with go-karts, virtual racers may spend afternoons challenging themselves, their friends, and perfect strangers inside Checkered Flag's indoor video arcade (not included in today's Groupon). New video games, pinball machines, and air hockey tables dot the interior, along with vending machines, which feature food, soda, and—for first-place finishers—ice cold bottles of milk.
Checkered Flag Raceway
A full quarter mile of outdoor track snakes across the grass, sending racers on an adrenaline-fueled grudge match of hairpin turns, pedal-pushing straightaways, and close finishes. A speedy fleet of go-karts sends drivers flying down the track in vehicles such as the swift 9-horsepower Interceptor, or the two-seater Tornado, which allows children to ride alongside their parents to learn proper three-point turn technique. An on-track scoreboard displays racers’ lap times with accuracy up to a 1,000th of a second, and printed results enshrine automotive achievements and bragging rights for display. Inside, a beeping, blinking arcade pits gamers head-to-head in pro-racing simulators or rousing tournaments of air hockey.
